“Couch to 5K and beyond” 5K Challenge 11am Saturday 27th February

“Couch to 5K and beyond” 5K Challenge 11am Saturday 27th February

Last Saturday, 27th February, 53 athletes (yes you are all athletes now!) of the class of 2016 bravely turned out to take on the 5K track challenge. The training has been done over the last 8 weeks, there had been a lot of sweat and some tears – mostly from Eleanor trying to make sure the clock was charged and working properly for the big day!

Facing in to twelve and a half continuous laps of the track and under instruction to also keep count of the laps completed at the same time would have even the more experienced runner feeling nervous but our crew took it on with confidence not a bit fazed by the large group of enthusiastic family members and friends who had gathered to cheer them on.

We are happy to report that all 53 completed the challenge, for many their first time ever covering the 5K distance bringing a whole new meaning to “Believe & Achieve”. There were huge smiles and lots of hugs at the finish line as times were recorded and medals collected. Congratulations to each and every one of you on a super achievement. Your times are recorded below for reference, but remember it’s not all about times, it’s about having some fun, keeping healthy and achieving your own personal goals.

On behalf of both the participants and the club, huge thanks to Eleanor and the C25K volunteer team for giving up their time every week to get the group over the first finish line. Thanks to all the volunteers who came out on Saturday to assist with registrations, recording results and providing the very welcome post-run tea and biccies.

There were a number of people unable to make it on Saturday so for those people you will have another opportunity to earn your 5K medal on Tuesday night.

Also on Tuesday we head into Phase 2 or the “beyond” bit of the programme with sights set on one of the highlights of the Dunboyne AC calendar, the EirGrid Dunboyne 4 Mile Road Race & Fun Run on Sunday 3rd April at 3pm. You’ve already done all the hard work and by completing 5K (3.1 miles) you only have another .9 of a mile to add on over the next 5 weeks to get to 4 miles. Training will continue at the track as usual at 9pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the Saturday sessions will involve getting away from the track to practice on the 4 mile route. Don’t worry, our super team of volunteers will be with you all the way encouraging, supporting and making sure everyone is safe out on the roads.

Registration is now open for the 4 Mile with online entry €20 per adult (or €25 on the day). Make sure to specify Dunboyne AC as your club name so that we can retrieve your results afterwards.
