Inter County Track and Field Competition

Inter County Track and Field Competition

On Saturday the 16th of July 2016 Dunboyne AC had six athletes in action in the green of Meath as the Royal County took on Wicklow, Laois and Kildare in an Inter County Track and Field Competition at the Le Cheile Track. For a change the weather conditions were favourable, with all our athletes pulling their weight and contributing point for their efforts towards the county total. Meath were runners up on the day, keeping the host county Kildare on their toes all the way to the final few events.

Conor Leane was back in good form as he easily took victory in both the u14 800m and 1500m, leading both races from start to finish. Brother Marc not looking good as he bagged a bagful of points in the 80m and 200m to top up the family’s contribution, but doubled jobbed as he motivated his brother to give it his all. Both boys were part of the under 14 4 by 100m relay team that came home third.

We had three under 15 athletes in this team competition. Jack Hayes was in action both in the high jump and long jump and under the close supervision of his mammy he equalled his pb in the high jump to make it a one -two for Meath in that competition. Philip Thornton took up a few new events to fill the gaps in the team in his age group and finished the day with a large grin on his face as he won the shot putt, sprinted second in the 200m and jumped into third in the long jump before moving up an age group to help the under 17 relay team come home second in their relay. Our only lady in action at the Leixlip venue was Katie Reilly who lined out in the 1500m, where she was often the pace setter in what was the most exciting finish of the busy race schedule, coming third in a blanket finish and showing her growing potential.

Though not back in training after injury, group elder Thomas Thornton brushed off the cobwebs as he pushed the opposition all the way to the line where he ended up in third. He also competed in the under 17 high jump where he also finished in the points. He was warming up by the time the under 17 relay came along where he had the county’s strongest leg as the lads came home second.

Well done to all, it was a competition that Meath could have won had we a full complement of athletes, NEXT YEAR!!!!. Thanks to all the patient parents who came along to support our budding stars.
