Meath Championship Senior Relay, 18th May 2016

Wednesday 18th May saw some of our senior members have a stab at the relay once the juveniles had shown them how it’s done! We had both a women’s and men’s team in the Senior 4X100 relay. The ladies were up first – Roisin Bell took the first leg and passed to Rosemary Higgins who seamlessly passed the baton to Ciara Devitt, another seamless pass to Saoirse McGrath who went flying down the straight, almost catching the girl in front to finish in 3rd position and bronze.

Next up were the lads: our three coaches Keith Eglington, Con McCormack and Stephen Griffin were ably joined by John O’Malley despite his excellent 5K in Na Fianna the previous night. Con was a little concerned (to say the least) about his dodgy hamstring but as per instructions the team left little for him to do on the last leg but sail down the down the straight to claim another bronze. Well done lads!

The Senior Medley was the last race of the night and the mens’ and womens’ were run together. This time Keith was joined by Luke Phelan, Thomas Thornton and David White. The same women’s team set out, this time Roisin and Rosemary covering the 200 meter legs, with Ciara taking the baton for the 400 and Saoirse finishing off on the 800. The girls went two better this time and were very happy with their gold medals as they headed off into the night. The boys made it two for two wining Bronze in their race.

The relay is great fun – bear it in mind for next year and we might get a few more teams taking part. A few practices with the baton is all that’s needed and then you’ve another team event to enjoy.
