We counted 38 Dunboyne AC participants at the 3rd Frank Fagan Duathlon on Sunday and 38 stellar performances to boot. A very big well done to everyone who took part and shared the Dunboyne AC sporting spirit with our visitors. Our club members led the way on home turf in more ways than one.
Alan Kenny (thoughtfully J) led the way as he finished first overall, proudly sporting his Dunboyne AC singlet on the final 3K leg. No doubt, this was just another day’s training for his upcoming October World Championship Ironman in Hawaii. The very best of luck to you Alan, we’ll all be rooting for you!
Ciara O’Neill also turned in an incredible performance as she led the women on the 10K run, 54K cycle and 3K run until her nearest rival denied us a Dunboyne AC male/female double, pipping Ciara on the line as it all came down to a sprint finish. Less than a second separated the 2 women, as they both clocked 2.32.56 on the clock! Ciara, you did us all proud; very well done!
Alan and Ciara made it all look so easy that we could be forgiven for underestimating the scale of the challenge for an individual duathlete; a 10K run, 54K cycle and 3K run. It’s a really big ask! Kudos to Fintan Crehan, Heather Harold, John Carney, Keith Eglington, Michael O’Dwyer and Stephen Griffin for also stepping up for the full challenge and smashing it! Respect!
As usual, we were very well represented in the teams’ category of the event; some teaming with family, some teaming with friends and some playing lucky dip. Ray Mitchell, Dan Higgins and Tom Fallon even took to their bikes to team with Dunboyne AC running clubmates. The banter and teamwork adds another dimension to this event, not to mention the excitement of waiting for your partner to return. And Dunboyne AC impressed on the podium too! Laura Buckley and Ciaran were the reigning Mixed Team Champs from 2016. Not content with retaining the title, they went one better by being first overall team across the line this time. Claire Ni Fhaircheallaigh teamed with her long-time friend Ciara and they claimed second prize in the women’s team category. Geoff Hamilton and Jim Lineen did battle in the Men’s Relay team, having gamefully entered the “match-making” lottery without any expectations of their cycling partners; happy to team up with “any cyclist who could make it to Summerhill and back on the same day,” as Jim put it. Well, lo and behold, but it only turned out that these 2 matches were made in heaven and Jim and Declan won the men’s relay category, while Geoff and Stephen claimed second place. Congratulations to all our team players. Well done Ana Quigley, Deirdre Fitzsimons, Eileen Soraghan, Joan Hodgins, Joe McGuinness, Karen Harris, Michelle Higgins, Sarah Meegan, Siobhan Campbell and Vivienne Lennon. We believe there were even a few PB’s!
Cian Mangan led us home in the 10K run category claiming first prize in the process. Antoinette Howlin won the ladies race and Elaine Donovan won the Master’s category. Angela Egan, Ann Ryan, Ger Fagan and Kate Quirke all turned in great runs. The walking section of Fit4Life was impressively represented by Brede Grehan, Marian O’Leary, Norah Moffatt and Rosemarie Donnelly as they are in training for upcoming Camino trips. The ladies even threw in a victory lap of the track before crossing the line! Well done everyone.
And we weren’t done there, because Adrian Tiernan and Annemarie Sheehan blazed a trail on the 54K cycle, with Adrian winning the Men’s Master’s category while Annemarie won the overall ladies race.
Congratulations to one and all. Names and overall times are below. If we have missed anyone, please let us know so that we can add you. Full split times are available at http://www.myrunresults.com/events/_the_frank_fagan_memorial_duathlon/2081/results.
Sincere thanks to all the Dunboyne AC members who volunteered and supported on the day. The Duathlon Facebook page will post an official thank you to all volunteers this week.
