Fit4Life win GOLD at Raheny 5 mile, Sunday 31st January

Fit4Life declared their 2016 racing intentions in spectacular style with a turnout of 22 in Raheny. Add to that a dozen or so Seniors and it felt like a fun club day outing. The overall field of 2,700 confirmed that this really is the biggest Club Road Race of the year as billed.

The day was relatively mild, drizzly and windy and the new 5 mile route included quite a few drags. They even tried to slow us down with speed ramps. We just accelerated through them.

There were so many highlights  we can only mention a few:

Annette Finlay, Ger Ryan, Ruth O’Dwyer and Siobhan Campbell  WON the women’s over 50 team category in emphatic fashion, with a score of 76 points, 23 points clear of the second team and 56 clear of third. And small wonder too when you consider their amazing times below, that would do many a Senior athlete proud. In a high-calibre field like Raheny, this is a phenomenal achievement. Congratulations ladies.

Well done to Pat Ryan, first home for Fit4Life in a time of 38.15.

Jackie Brannigan was first home for the ladies in a super time of 40.59 which meant she was the third scorer on the overall ladies’ club team. Congrats Jackie; always an honour to make the club’s first team.

Angela Egan was 9th in her age category. Kay Gilmartin was 10th in hers.

Declan Farrell broke the 40 minute barrier for the first time.

Richard O’Brien availed of the 5 mile walk option that set off 20 minutes before the rest of the field and clearly sustained a very impressive pace throughout.

Everyone had a super performance in one way or another, the strength of our numbers providing that extra pep in our step and that team victory.

Congrats to Coach Kavanagh and to our golden-girl-turned-Senior-lady Emily Ryan on their super performances as detailed in the Senior report.

Many thanks to our clubmates who turned out in wet weather to support us at various points along the route; Annemarie, the Bexons, Claire and her girls, Clodagh, Dee, Emilia, Jennifer & Kevin, Paul, Sean, Tommy and no doubt a few others we’ve missed here. Your support made all the difference and is much appreciated.

We finished and collected the famed Raheny goody bags including a lovely plaque and lots of sweet treats.  Safe to say, the New Year’s resolutions are well and truly over. You’ll spot us at the track on Tuesday. We’ll be the ones with the smug faces and the extra tight fitting gear. We’ll need to enter our next race/fun-run very soon.
