Sunday 31st January saw 11 of our athletes racing in the AXA Raheny 5 mile road race. The race, in its 33rd year, is one of the most eagerly awaited events on the athletics calendar and kicks off the new year racing season for many. There was a slight course change this year which removed the notorious Watermill hill and instead saw an out and back section in St. Anne’s Park. Conditions on the day, while wet and windy, did not deter anyone from their sterling performances. First over the line for the senior crew was Rory Kavanagh who stormed home in 26:22 and 17th place overall, next up was Phelim Glynn in 27: 10 and 1st in his age category, both athletes having raced in Dundalk on the previous Sunday, they were swiftly followed by Alan Kenny (27:42), Patrick Peters (29:10) and Kevin Deery (32:14). Patrick was 2nd in his age category. Our first lady home was Ciara Devitt (35:34) also off the back of last weeks’ National XC, Ciara was 66th female overall. Emily Ryan, our next lady home in 38:10 was 3rd in her age category, a fantastic performance from both. Alan Doyle (36.19), Stephen Murphy (42:10) and Sean Manning (47:29) all had superb times. Well done to everyone. Thanks too to the many Dunboyne supporters out there on the day and well done to Raheny Shamrocks on another well organised race.
